I am an illustrator and cartoonist. My main interest is in communication and training. Humour and appropriate cartoons may seem trivial but you would be surprised at how effective they can be in conveying information. Give someone a relatively simple message and, unless they write it down, the chances are that they will have forgotten it within an hour. Tell someone a convoluted joke and they will be able to repeat it word-for-word several months later while under the influence of alcohol.
The brain has specific receptors for things like humour so, if you can convey something in a way that stimulates this part of the brain, it will be retained more effectively. I provide illustrations to accompany training literature and have illustrated a number of articles in business magazines and Health & Safety handbooks. I illustrated Lawyering skills and the Legal Process by Caroline Maughan and Julian Webb. Published by Butterworths, it was initially for The West of England University in Bristol but has since become standard reading for legal education in the UK and I am currently working on another book project with a client.
I have always been an illustrator and, in addition, I have worked with Special Needs groups including those with physical handicaps, mental health issues and adults with autistic spectrum syndrome. Illustration has proved useful in these fields also as many of the people with whom I worked relied on images for communication. I retired from care work in 2008 and now focus on illustration and art in general.
